What to put on an electrician invoice

  • Your name or business name, and your address.
  • Your client's name and address.
  • A unique invoice number. Keep them in order so they are easy to track.
  • The invoice date, and the date you supplied the goods or services if it is different.
  • A description of what you supplied, with quantities and prices.
  • The total amount due and the date it should be paid by.
  • How to pay you, such as your bank details.
  • If you are VAT registered: your VAT number, the tax point, the VAT rate and the VAT amount.
  • The type of work, so it is clear what was installed or tested.
  • Labour and materials on separate lines.
  • Any certificate you issued, for example an installation certificate, by name and number if you use one.

This is general guidance, not tax or legal advice. GOV.UK has the full rules on invoices and VAT.

Questions

Should I list materials separately?

Yes. It shows the customer what they paid for and makes it easy to explain the total.

Can I mention a certificate on the invoice?

Yes. A line such as "Electrical installation certificate issued" tells the customer the paperwork is covered.

Do I need to be VAT registered?

Only if your turnover goes over the threshold or you choose to register. Switch tax on if you are.

How do I invoice stage payments?

Add a line for each stage, or make an invoice per stage and number them in order.
