What to put on a painter and decorator invoice
- Your name or business name, and your address.
- Your client's name and address.
- A unique invoice number. Keep them in order so they are easy to track.
- The invoice date, and the date you supplied the goods or services if it is different.
- A description of what you supplied, with quantities and prices.
- The total amount due and the date it should be paid by.
- How to pay you, such as your bank details.
- If you are VAT registered: your VAT number, the tax point, the VAT rate and the VAT amount.
- The rooms or areas painted, so there is no doubt what was covered.
- Labour and materials as separate lines.
- Any extras agreed on the day, such as extra coats or repairs, on their own lines.

Questions
How should I describe the work?
List each room or area with a line, such as "Hallway and stairs, two coats". It matches your quote and avoids questions.
Can I add materials at cost?
Yes. List paint and sundries as one line with the amount you paid, or with your mark-up if you agreed it.
What if extra work came up?
Add it as its own line so the client can see what changed from the quote.
Do I charge VAT?
Only if you are VAT registered.
