What to put on an invoice without VAT
- Your name or business name, and your address.
- Your client's name and address.
- A unique invoice number. Keep them in order so they are easy to track.
- The invoice date, and the date you supplied the goods or services if it is different.
- A description of what you supplied, with quantities and prices.
- The total amount due and the date it should be paid by.
- How to pay you, such as your bank details.
- If you are VAT registered: your VAT number, the tax point, the VAT rate and the VAT amount.
- No VAT number and no VAT line. If you are not VAT registered you must not charge VAT.
- A short note such as "Not VAT registered" if you want your client to know why there is no VAT.
- The total, which is simply the sum of your lines less any discount.

Questions
Can I send an invoice without VAT?
Yes. If you are not VAT registered you should not charge VAT, so your invoice shows the total with no tax line.
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your taxable turnover goes over the UK registration threshold. GOV.UK has the current figure.
What if I register later?
Switch tax on, enter your VAT number and the rate, and the same template becomes a VAT invoice.
Do I still need an invoice number?
Yes. Every invoice should have its own number whether or not VAT is charged.
